Why Take Notes By Hand?

In one academic study, a survey determined that out of ten note-takers, seven favored taking notes longhand with pen and paper (hard-copy note-taking), one preferred using an electronic device such as a laptop (soft-copy note-taking), and two indicated they equally used both hard and soft copy note-taking.6

When asked why most students preferred hard-copy note-taking, the overwhelming reason was that the use of devices (specifically laptops) was distracting. The distractions named included, in descending order, surfing the web, the sound of typing, games, online chatting, and email. From their answers, you could tell that nearly all of the distractions affected the note-takers themselves rather than the people adjacent to them (i.e., the sound of typing).

When asked about the benefits they got from their method, all respondents (both for hard and soft copy methods) named efficiency, retention, understanding class material, and organization. Students derived the same benefits from their preferred note-taking method.

Students allowed to take notes while listening to the teacher did better than those who only listened but were not allowed to take notes.7Students who wrote their notes by writing longhand achieved better scores than their peers who relied on notes provided by the teacher 8 or who used devices such as laptops.9
